First Community Fair

October 2, 2010
Eli Whitney Elementary School
Chicago, IL

The first ever ChiS&E community fair made engineering come alive for the Little Village and South Lawndale neighborhood. Students and parents alike experienced the practical fun of engineering first hand through a series of activities that explored the challenges of wind, water and balance. Parents also heard from successful Latino, African American and other engineers about the substantial number of opportunities available in various engineering professions. The goal of the ChiS&E Community Fair is to inspire students and parents a deeper appreciation for math, science and technology education.

About

The ChiS&E Community Fair outreach effort uses hands-on activities, parent-child interaction, professional teaching and community role modeling to both inspire and equip. ChiS&E staff team with UI engineering students, Chicago public school teachers and local professionals to create an exciting, half-day learning and awareness building event. ChiS&E Community Fairs try to target neighborhoods where a college degree or a STEM career would be a first generation occurrence, and inspire communities to challenge their children with that expectation.

  • Raise community awareness about the importance of student success in science and mathematics
  • Illuminate the pathway to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professions
  • Inspire a passion for science and math through hands-on activities that make engineering come alive
  • Equip parents to provide supportive STEM-related learning experience for their children
